Back to basics with the Light Phone III

Third-party review by Marques Brownlee

“A phone designed to give you the tools to flourish as the most thoughtful & intentional version of yourself.”

The latest “dumb phone” is the Light Phone, designed to be a long-lasting, distraction-free device with minimal features. Its display is black and white, and it will never support social media, internet browsing, email, news, or ads.

Available tools (meaning you can enable whichever ones you want) include an alarm, timer, calculator, calendar, contact directory, directions, notes/voice memo, and simple audio player. The phone itself has GPS, bluetooth, finger print ID, a noise cancellation mic, camera, flashlight, supports voice-to-text, and can be used as a personal hotspot. Future features include a potential digital wallet with the NFC chip, and video calls/accessibility features with a front-facing camera.

However, the cost is steep for pretty minimal features. Wired published a review of The Light Phone’s last model that you can check out, and the video above includes a balanced user review.

$800 for the phone, $25+/mo. for a compatible plan
