Smartphone Free Childhood (US)

This campaign, run by a nonprofit, is raising awareness of the dangers of both smartphones and social media for children. Their stated goal is to inspire and empower others to create smartphone-free childhoods by connecting, collaborating, sharing resources, and finding support.

So far, they have:

  • Created a WhatsApp group, Facebook group, monthly newsletter, weekly community calls

  • Launched the Parent Group Locator with 250+ groups for parents to connect locally

  • Created the Phone-Free Schools Database for parents, educators and legislators to reference

  • Hosted webinars, community calls and book clubs to discuss key issues

  • Produced a pretty cool ad

This feature in Time Magazine explains the backstory behind their founder, Laura Derrendinger, and her motivations to launch this effort.
